Hi Marc-
(Marc asked a question about Dino's"Yosemite Sam" drumset, which was accidently deleted (sorry), but here is my reply: JR)
Here's what I know about the YOSEMITE SAM drums; these character images are actually POSTERS (sold in head shops at the time), that Dino cut and reassembled as decorative drum coverings, (perhaps sealing them with an protective acetate or plastic sheeting). They were hand constructed by Dino himself-who as you probably know is a terrific creative artist. The characters are called YOSEMITE SAM (Looney Tunes, Warner Bros.) and UNCLE SCROOGE McDUCK ( Walt Disney). I believe the kit (including the drum stool!) is a re-covering of the set (silver with black stripe) which he is playing in the photo at the header of this page (which was taken in EARLY 1968) I have quite a few color photos of Dino playing the YOSEMITE SAM kit, which first appeared in the spring of 1968 and was played at venues throughout the year, most notably THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL in LA , THE SINGER BOWL in New York, JFK STADIUM in Connecticut and COBO HALL in Michigan as well as on their second appearance on THE KRAFT MUSIC HALL TV show. I will likely post PHOTOS of this kit, including some I uncovered of Dino assembling this drumkit in Atlantic studios (he used in on FREEDOM SUITE LP), when the ARCHIVES site gets back to normal. I don't think the kit was used beyond the year 1968 as he switched to the all-white SEE drums for their European tour in early 1969, and later in 1970, a kit that had an evergreen landscape painted on it. - JOE RUSSO

Joe,
Thanks for the info. Excellent! Can't wait to see the picks. You don't know how long I've been looking for them.
I have a promo shot of the group, where his drums are painted white and you can actually see the seam where the black stripe is.
I found some early black & white photos of the group that I stumbled on. They are really great pics of the band playing in a night club in N.Y. Some of the people in the crowd are Bobby Sherman and guys from the lovin spoonful. Are you familiar with these shots? If not I can send them to you. Marc |
