| Gene wore several "hats" in the band, and in many ways is their unsung hero. In addition to uniquely covering both lead and rhythm guitar playing, he contributed some fine songs, vocals and production work. He also complimented Eddie to form the "frontline" juggernaut of the band during live performances. He enjoyed pre-Rascals sucess on a local level in his hometown (Rochester, NY) with several regional solo singles ("Let's Do The Capri"), and later as leader of THE UNBEATABLES (" I Wanna Be A Beatle") whom appeared on television, concert stages and released one album "The Unbeatables Live At Palisades Park". Some of Gene's watermark Rascals-era compositions include "I'm So Happy Now", "Me And My Friends" and "Away,Away" He also produced several artists including THE BRASS BUTTONS ("My Song", 1968), APRIL WINE (with Dino) and others, and performed in a series of post-Rascals bands, all with Dino Danelli, including BULLDOG ("No"), FOTOMAKER ("Where Have You Been All My Life"), FROZEN, and MODO ("I Wish I Could Dance Like Fred Astaire"). In the 80's, he formed his own classic rock & soul cover band GC DANGEROUS and is currently performing again with Dino as THE NEW RASCALS-- JOE RUSSO |
